Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds Can’t Stop His Whip Appeal at 11th Annual Jazz in the Gardens

March 21, 2016

Over the weekend the 11th Annual Jazz in the Gardens kicked off to the excited of pleased attendees.  Major performers included Usher, Charlie Wilson, Kool and the Gang, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Brian Culbertson, Janelle Monae, JITG All-Stars and gospel artist Fred Hammond. The soul of Jazz in the Gardens was prevalent throughout the entire weekend offering an array of superior acts that festival goers could enjoy.

This year over 70,000 fans came to the festival presented by the city of Miami Gardens at Sunlife Stadium in Miami Gardens. The massive stadium hosts Jazz in Gardens yearly to countless jazz aficionados. Some local artists also took to the stage including Lavie, April Raquel, CriStyle Renae and Ronny VOP.

Of course the night was bestowed to Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds who brought his powerhouse smooth vocals. Edmonds, who will be turning 58 this April surprised fans with timeless ballads that devotees recited on cue. The babyface singer introduced songs such as “Soon as I Get Home”, “Whip Appeal”, “Can’t Stop”, “On Two Occasions” and sentimental tune “Every time I Close My Eyes”. The balladeer singer kept to his charming R&B roots sampling fellow R& B crooners including headliner Usher, Bobby Brown, The Boys and Tevin Campbell.

Usher, who was the headliner kept it sweet and sexy for his adoring female fans. He belted out favorites “Daddy’s Home”, “Nice and Slow”, “U Remind Me”, “Caught Up”, “You Make Me Wanna”, Chris Brown’s “Back to Sleep”, “Climax,” and tracks from his platinum album “Confessions.” During his rendition, Usher made a gasp remark when his faithful fans didn’t recognize particular lyrics to some of his hottest songs.

“You need to study before you come to a Usher concert,” shouted Usher to roaring fans. The sexy crooner is also working on a new studio album. He teased a new track from that upcoming album which is true to Usher’s seductive R&B style.

The “electric lady,” Janelle Monae gave all the energetic feels with her contagious sound. The crowd took to the tiny diva’s anthem of “Electric Lady, “Tight Rope” and hip shaking track “Yoga.” There was a sense of politicking instilled in her performance set to the tune of “Cold War” in which Monae emphasized political activism. A product of her musical environment, the songstress paid homage to iconic group, “The Jackson 5” and “The hardest working man in show business” James Brown.

The 11th Annual Jazz in the Gardens festival ushered in a plethora of great performances.  Here’s to hoping the 12th Annual Jazz in the Gardens continues to play to the beat of hopeless musical enthusiasts.
