March 24, 2016

It’s a sad day today. Malik “Phife” Taylor, a member of A Tribe Called Quest passed away Tuesday after a long battle with diabetes. It’s been reported that “Phife” had battled diabetes for 25 years and succumbed to the disease at the age of 45.

Phife Dawg (né Malik Taylor) "has passed away due to complications resulting from diabetes," a statement provided to PEOPLE reads. "Malik was our loving husband, father, brother and friend. We love him dearly. How he impacted all our lives will never be forgotten.

Phife was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1990 one month after A Tribe Called Quest released their first album, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm.

Many celebrities offered their condolences on Twitter and reminisced on his inspiration to the  hip hop community and its counterparts.

"Rest In Beats PHIFE ATCQ Forever," Chuck D of Public Enemy wrote on Twitter early Wednesday.

"Huge loss today. A legend. A NY hip-hop originator.#RIPPhifeDawg Sending love to his close friends and fam. Today we are all in the Tribe," tweeted Kerry Washington.

Today homage was made as many of his legendary tracks were played over the airwaves including the mid-tempo cool based record Award Tour.
